What Should You Do If There's an Outstanding Warrant for Your Arrest in Las Vegas?
Many people aren't aware that it is possible to have a warrant for your arrest and do not even know it until it's too late. This can happen when law enforcement works with prosecutors to open criminal cases for an incident you thought was long over and done with. It's also possible that you were mailed a summons to appear in court only to later learn – after the warrant is issued – that the summons was sent to an old or incorrect address. This can also happen after getting a traffic ticket and forgetting to pay the fine before the court date.
It is also not uncommon for a court date to be continued for one reason or another, and these changes can make it easy to miss a court date or show up late because your court appearance moved from one department or courtroom to another. There are even situations where even after someone enters a plea or resolves their case, a warrant can be issued if they fail to pay a fine, complete community service, or complete court-ordered classes.
Regardless of the circumstances, if you fail to appear in court on a specified date and time – even if you did not know about the date, time, or location of your court appearance, or even if you were completely unaware that a case had been opened against you - the court will issue a warrant for your arrest. And once the warrant is issued, you will almost certainly be arrested if you come into contact with law enforcement.
For example, if you have a traffic accident and law enforcement comes to the accident, you might get arrested at a very unexpected and inconvenient time. Or perhaps you are stopped for speeding on the way to work and find yourself receiving a speeding ticket and being arrested for a warrant you never knew about. Outstanding warrants can also appear on background checks and prevent you from being hired for a job.
It is critical that you work with an experienced criminal defense attorney. At Ford & Friedman, our knowledgeable criminal defense attorneys can help you determine the best course of action and work to resolve the warrant as quickly and effectively as possible so that you can avoid further legal complications.
